A New $6,000 Senior Tax Deduction Applies to 2025 Returns Due Oct. 15
Daniel Reeves
Updated Sep 10, 2026
Taxpayers age 65 or older may be able to claim a new federal deduction of up to $6,000 on their 2025 tax return. For people who timely requested a six-month filing extension, the federal return deadline is Oct. 15, 2026.
Oct. 15 is the extended filing deadline, but it is not a date that permanently erases the deduction. Filing late can create penalties and interest when tax is owed, but the IRS does not describe the deduction itself as disappearing the day after the deadline.
Who Can Claim the New Deduction
The enhanced deduction is available for tax years 2025 through 2028. A qualifying individual must be at least 65 by the end of the tax year and meet the IRS eligibility requirements.
The maximum is $6,000 per eligible person, or up to $12,000 for a married couple if both spouses qualify. The deduction begins to phase out when modified adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 for an individual or $150,000 for a married couple filing jointly.
The IRS also requires a valid Social Security number for the person claiming the deduction. Married taxpayers must file jointly to claim it.
It Is in Addition to the Existing Senior Deduction
This is not a replacement for the existing age-based increase in the standard deduction. The IRS says the enhanced senior deduction is available in addition to that existing tax benefit.
It is also available whether a qualifying taxpayer takes the standard deduction or itemizes. That makes the new provision broader than a tax break that is limited only to standard-deduction filers.
What the Oct. 15 Deadline Does Mean
An extension gives more time to file a return, but it does not give more time to pay tax that was due in April. The IRS advises taxpayers who still owe to pay as soon as possible to limit additional penalties and interest.
For an extension filer who qualifies for the new deduction, the practical goal is to make sure the 2025 return includes it correctly before filing. The deduction is also scheduled to remain available for tax years 2026, 2027 and 2028 under current law.
A Free Filing Option May Still Be Available
The IRS says Free File is available to qualifying taxpayers within the program’s income limits. People preparing an extended 2025 return can check IRS eligibility rules before paying for filing software or preparation solely because the October deadline is approaching.
