Medicare Just Made Weight Loss Drugs Available for $50 a Month. Here Is What You Need to Know.

For the first time in the program’s history, Medicare is now helping pay for weight loss drugs. As of July 1, eligible seniors can access them for $50 a month.

What You Should Know

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services launched the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program on July 1, 2026, making GLP-1 weight loss medications available to eligible Medicare Part D enrollees at a flat $50 monthly copayment. The program runs through December 31, 2027. CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz stated at the launch that the program exists because too many seniors were unable to access these treatments due to high cost.

Until July 1, federal law prohibited Medicare from covering weight loss drugs for obesity. The Bridge program operates under a temporary demonstration authority that sidesteps that prohibition. The medications covered include Wegovy in injection and tablet form, Zepbound in the KwikPen formulation, and Foundayo tablets, according to CMS.

The Pressure Point

A KFF analysis published alongside the launch estimated that 3.8 million Medicare Part D beneficiaries could be eligible for the Bridge program, representing 8 percent of the 47.5 million Part D plan members in 2023. Cash-pay prices for these medications range from $149 to $449 per month depending on the medication and dosage, making the $50 copay a significant reduction.

There are important limitations. The $50 copay does not count toward a beneficiary’s annual Part D deductible or the $2,100 out-of-pocket cap on prescription drug costs. Beneficiaries who qualify for the Medicare Extra Help low-income subsidy still owe the full $50. Those already receiving a GLP-1 through their regular Part D plan for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or sleep apnea are not eligible for the Bridge program.

What Happens Next

Beneficiaries who believe they may qualify should speak with their doctor, who must submit a prior authorization request to the Bridge program. The program ends December 31, 2027. CNBC reported that the long-term replacement program - the BALANCE Model - was delayed by CMS in April 2026 for the 2027 calendar year. If Congress does not act and no extension is approved, seniors who gained access to weight loss drugs through the Bridge program could lose that coverage at the end of 2027.
